Exploring Crete: Bob’s Trip to Greece’s Largest Island
Crete, the largest island in Greece, is a sun-drenched blend of ancient legends, vivid landscapes, authentic villages, and world-class relaxation. If you’re contemplating a Greek getaway or a return visit, Crete’s rich history, dramatic coastlines, and vibrant food scene make it a destination you’ll want to linger in.
Whether you’re dreaming of hiking ancient gorges, relaxing on pink-sand beaches, or savoring authentic farm-to-table cheese in a Cretan village, Riverdale Travel would love to help plan your trip! As the owner, I’m proud to say our team brings years of firsthand experience and insider knowledge to every itinerary.
To get you inspired, here are insights from my recent getaway to Crete!
Getting to Crete
Daily flights connect Athens to Crete’s two main airports: Heraklion and Chania.
Aegean Airlines and Olympic Airways are the primary carriers, with additional connections from major European cities. Both airports provide rental car options, making road-tripping across the island flexible and straightforward.
If you’re interested in bundling your stay, Delta Vacations offers packages for several top resorts on the island.
Crete’s Must-See Spots
1. Knossos Palace
Step into ancient mythology at the legendary Minoan palace, believed to be the home of the famous Minotaur's labyrinth. Explore sprawling ruins, restored frescoes, and intricate courtyards.
Wander through the Throne Room and catch glimpses of daily life in Europe's oldest city-state. The site’s vivid artwork and complex architecture offer a fascinating window into Minoan civilization, making it a must-see for history enthusiasts.
Tickets are available on site or can be booked in advance if not part of a guided tour.

2. Heraklion Archaeological Museum
This museum is a paradise for history enthusiasts, featuring well-curated exhibits that bring the Minoan civilization to life. It’s home to the world’s largest collection of Minoan artifacts!
Interactive displays and detailed descriptions provide valuable context, making it easy to appreciate the artistry, daily life, and innovations of ancient Crete. Don’t miss treasures like the Phaistos Disc and frescoes from Knossos.

3. Elafonisi Beach
With its crystalline waters, charming coastal villages, and rich tapestry of history and culture, Greece offers unparalleled beaches that captivate the senses and ignite the soul. This destination is renowned for its distinctive pink-hued sand and shallow, turquoise waters, making it perfect for families, nature enthusiasts, and those seeking a tranquil beach experience.
A protected nature reserve, Elafonisi is a haven for rare plant species and migratory birds, making it a popular destination for eco-conscious travelers. At low tide, you can easily wade across a sparkling lagoon from the mainland to the islet, discovering hidden coves and unspoiled stretches of coastline.

4. Samaria Gorge
Embark on a 16-kilometer trek through one of Europe’s longest gorge systems. Enjoy dramatic cliffs, shaded walkways, and lush scenery along the way.
Samaria Gorge’s trail takes you from the cool forested Omalos Plateau down to the Libyan Sea, with plenty of opportunities for wildlife spotting along the way. The sense of accomplishment at the end is matched only by the extraordinary natural beauty you'll witness at every step.

5. Day Trip to Dia Island
Sail for about 90 minutes to this uninhabited islet. Spend the day snorkeling, swimming, and enjoying a leisurely lunch on peaceful shores.
The waters around Dia Island are crystal clear and teeming with marine life, making it ideal for both casual swimmers and avid snorkelers alike. With little development and plenty of quiet coves, the island offers a sense of total escape.
This is the perfect spot for unwinding away from the crowds and soaking up the natural beauty of Crete’s coastline!

A Taste of Local Life
A visit to a traditional Cretan farm offered an up-close look at the region’s celebrated food culture. Feeding and milking goats was hands-on fun, and seeing goat cheese and olive oil made the old-fashioned way was a delicious learning experience.
Watching milk transform into cheese before our eyes was a truly remarkable experience!

Practical Travel Insights
Crete’s Size
The island is vast, and one week may only scratch the surface. Car rentals are highly recommended for exploring at your own pace.
Driving from east to west typically takes 5–6 hours, with routes meandering through scenic villages and charming towns.
Arranging Your Trip
My journey was coordinated through Delta Vacations, which included flights to and from Athens.
However, flights between Athens and Crete are with Aegean Airlines — since Aegean isn’t a Delta partner, you’ll need to claim your luggage in Athens before re-checking for the flight to
Crete. Plan extra time for this process.
