UPDATE: August 6th, 2020

The Department of State advises all U.S. citizens to read the country-specific Travel Advisories and U.S. Embassy COVID pages for updates on the impact of COVID-19 worldwide.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect countries differently. Challenges to any international travel at this time may include mandatory quarantines, travel restrictions, and closed borders. Foreign governments may implement restrictions with little notice, even in destinations that were previously low risk. If you choose to travel internationally, your trip may be severely disrupted, and it may be difficult to arrange travel back to the United States.

Global Level 4 Heath Advisory – DO NOT TRAVEL

The Department of State advises U.S. citizens to avoid all international travel due to the global impact of COVID-19.  In countries where commercial departure options remain available, U.S. citizens who live in the United States should arrange for immediate return to the United States, unless they are prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period.  U.S. citizens who live abroad should avoid all international travel.  Many countries are experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks and implementing travel restrictions and mandatory quarantines, closing borders, and prohibiting non-citizens from entry with little advance notice.  Airlines have cancelled many international flights and several cruise operators have suspended operations or cancelled trips.  If you choose to travel internationally, your travel plans may be severely disrupted, and you may be forced to remain outside of the United States for an indefinite timeframe. March 12, 2020

Fellow travelers;

The last 48 hours have been a whirlwind of information so I wanted to write to you today to share further information and some suggestions as you map out your travel plans for the next few months. While the decision to travel by any means during the Coronavirus epidemic is a very personal one, I wanted you to understand where the industry stands at this time and provide you with information (much of which is changing daily) to help you make your own decisions.

On March 11th, the US State Department issued a Global Level 3 Health Advisory advising all US citizens to reconsider travel abroad as many areas of the world are now experiencing COVID 19 outbreaks and taking steps to limit traveler mobility including quarantines and border restrictions. Countries that currently do not have restrictions in place MAY restrict travel without notice.

FLIGHTS: President Trump signed a Presidential Proclamation which suspends the entry of most foreign nationals who have been in certain European Countries at any point during 14 days prior to their scheduled arrival into the US. The travel ban will last 30 days beginning Friday.

US citizens, legal permanent residents and (generally) immediate family members of US citizens will be allowed to enter the US through one of 11 CDC approved airports including Atlanta, Dallas Fort Worth, Detroit, Newark, Honolulu, New York JFK, Los Angeles, Chicago O’Hare, Seattle, San Francisco and Washington Dulles.

Many of our airline partners have instituted flexible change policies for new and existing reservations.  But please note, unless a flight has been “cancelled” there is no option for a refund (unless it was a fully refundable ticket) so please get in touch so we can help you understand your options.

CRUISES: Several large cruise lines including Princess and Viking cruise lines have halted their sailings for the next 60 days.  Most cruise lines are offering a 100% FCC (Future Cruise Credit) if you cancel up to 48 hours prior to departure. Please note that in most cases, this FCC is good through the end of 2022. This is a unique offer we have never seen before, but certainly apropos for these times in that it offers the traveler a high level of flexibility and time to watch as the situation evolves. If you do have a current cruise booked and choose to cancel, please understand that each individual cruise line’s cancellation and refund policy will apply. We are here to help you ascertain what those policies are for your specific cruise.

A final note on cancellations. If you have paid in full for a trip (cruise, land or air) and have decided to cancel, in many cases, it is best to wait until closer to departure, even up to 14 days prior. Many cruise lines and airlines may choose to cancel departures or may modify their cancellation and refund policies further as this situation progresses.  Travel Protection (unless it is Cancel for Any Reason) does not cover cancellations due to travel advisories, fear of travel etc…

We all hope the situation stabilizes soon, but while it is evolving it is important to refer to verified information sources. In addition to the US Department of State advisory referenced above, we also recommend the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) and WHO (World Health Organization) as the best resources at this time.

Above all, know that while it is wonderful planning all your travel dreams in good times, I am also here in these more challenging travel times, to ensure your best interests are served.  Thank you for your trust and support.

Travel Well,
Your Riverdale Travel Team

Travel itinerary

Day 1: Saturday | Depart for Egypt

Overnight flight to Cairo

Details to come.

Day 2: Sunday | Arrive in Cairo

Welcome to Egypt, one of the world’s greatest ancient civilizations. Arrive in Cairo and transfer to your deluxe 5-star hotel located mere steps from the Great Pyramid. Enjoy time at the hotel pools, in the air-conditioned bars and restaurants, or in the lush hotel gardens. Tonight, attend an orientation meeting and welcome drink with your Tour Manager and fellow travelers at your hotel. Dinner is on your own.

Day 3: Monday | Cairo

After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, we start our tour at the Egyptian Museum*, a neoclassical building located on Tahrir Square. The museum houses the world’s largest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts with more than 120,000 items on display. Our tour manager (also an expert Egyptologist) will point out some of the more interesting artifacts and bring their stories to life. We enjoy lunch at an authentic Egyptian restaurant nearby. Then we visit Old Cairo’s ancient churches with crypts where the Holy family stayed during their period of exile. We also visit a Jewish Synagogue, and explore the famous Khan el Khalili Bazaar area with bustling markets
where we find copper, brass-ware, leather, perfumes and antiques. Tonight, treat yourself to a superb dinner at one of the fine international restaurants. Or, attend the Sound & Light Show held in Giza with views of the mighty Pyramids.
A spectacular and unforgettable evening.
*Note: this stop will be replaced by the new Grand Egyptian Museum when that facility opens to the public. B,L

Day 4: Tuesday | Cairo

After breakfast, we visit the famous Pyramids of Giza, built during the 3rd and 4th dynasties of the Old Kingdom. Enjoy an up-close view of the Great Pyramid, built for the Pharaoh Khufu, as well as the Pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure. We ride camels into the nearby desert for a different view. Not far from the Pyramids, we see the great Sphinx of Giza, the legendary statue with the head of a human and the body of a lion, amazingly carved out of a single, huge piece of limestone. We have lunch at an authentic Egyptian food restaurant, before continuing to Sakkara and the Step Pyramid. It is the first Pyramid and the oldest construction of stone in the world. We also observe wall carvings with daily life activities depicted on the Nobel Tombs. You may have
the opportunity to explore the Pharaoh’s Burial chamber. We return to our hotel for a relaxing evening on our own. B,L

Day 5: Wednesday | Aswan-Cruise

After breakfast, we fly to Aswan. Upon arrival, we have the morning at leisure in this ancient frontier town. Later, we transfer to our cruise ship, our home for the next three nights. After lunch, we have the opportunity for a rare glimpse into another world and even another time as we visit a Nubian Village including a family house, and school (if open). We sail with a motor boat through the National Parks of Aswan, watching local & migrant birds, various plants while learning about the Nubians’ origin, culture, ancient & modern history. We end our day with a beautiful Sunset Felucca Ride, the traditional sailboat of Egypt used along the Nile as we watch the exquisite sunset. Dinner is on board our Nile River cruise ship. B, L, D

Day 6: Thursday | Aswan/Cruise to Edfu

After breakfast, we tour the spectacular Aswan High Dam, an engineering miracle when originally constructed in the 1960s. We continue to Philae Temple, dedicated to the goddess Isis, and marvel at the temple’s beautiful island location. The tour concludes with a visit to a granite quarry holding the largest known unfinished ancient obelisk. In the afternoon, we set sail on the Nile. Watch the scenery pass from the pool or your sun-bed lounger. Our first stop is the temple of Kom Ombo, dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek and the sky god Horus. We continue to Edfu where we dock for the evening. B,L,D

Day 7: Friday | Edfu Temple, Cruise to Luxor

This morning, we take a horse-drawn carriage ride to the stunning Temple of Horus in Edfu, considered one of the best preserved of all the Egyptian temples. Built during the Ptolemaic times, it was completed over a 180-year period. This afternoon, the ship sails via Esna to Luxor, known in ancient Egyptian times as the city of Thebes and trove of historic treasures. There is an on-board lecture by our Egyptologist/Guide. B,L,D

Day 8: Saturday | Luxor

We view the magnificence of the Luxor West Bank with a visit to the UNESCO listed Valley of the Kings, the necropolis of Thebes and the tombs of ancient Egypt’s rulers. Next, we head to the Temple of Hatshepsut, a colonnaded structure surrounded by cliffs and learn about the life of Queen Hatshepsut, Egypt’s first female ruler. We conclude the tour at the Colossi of Memnon: two massive stone statues of the Pharaoh Amenhotep III before returning to the ship for lunch. In the afternoon, we tour the East Bank of Luxor and the magnificent Temples of Karnak, dating back over 3,000 years. Walk along the Avenue of the Sphinxes and marvel at the Hypostyle Hall with its 134 massive sandstone columns.
